One for Another Given

For Immediate Release - Toronto, May 2, 2001: Talisker Players' inaugural concert series comes to an end on a loving note, with an evening titled one for another given. An exploration of matters of the heart through music, this concert will take place at Glenn Gould Studio on Tuesday, May 22 at 8PM, and bring together renowned Canadian pianist Jane Coop, mezzo-soprano Mia Lennox, tenor Geoffrey Butler, and baritone Doug MacNaughton. one for another given will feature the world première of Northscapes, a song cycle for mezzo-soprano and string quartet by Toronto composer Alexander Rapoport.

At various stages in our lives, love appears through the prism of different emotions, its face constantly changing. one for another given is a poetic journey evoking the many facets of love. While Gabriel Fauré's famous song cycle, La bonne chanson is a passionate, intimate meditation on idealized love, Deux Poèmes (by Québec composer Rodolphe Mathieu) describes the burgeoning love of two young hearts. The ever inventive, yet often neglected Scottish Folk Songs by Beethoven portray a more naive sentiment.

Love is also a force of Nature, as evoked in Alexander Rapoport's Northscapes, a setting of texts by the poet, painter and literary critic Barker Fairley. It was commissioned by an anonymous donor, as a present to his wife on their 25th wedding anniversary. The poetry is mostly about the Laurentian shield, as the couple shares a passion for the wilderness. one for another given also offers an expression of undying love with Ernst Toch's Poems to Martha. The piece is a moving setting of four poems written by the composer's friend Joseph Haft after the tragic early death of his beloved wife Martha.

Talisker Players is an expandable string quartet with the unique mandate of presenting vocal chamber music. Members of Talisker Players share a passion for music and literature, hence this venture into the eclectic repertoire for solo voice and chamber ensemble. The ensemble is committed to expanding the vocal chamber music repertoire, by commissioning Canadian composers to write for the genre.
